Woolly Horseshoe Bat

by Rachael Button

Bat species discovered at Natural History Museum after 30 years“-BBC

A horseshoe-shaped face
designed for feeling sounds
wing flutters and footfalls
chasing my prey down.

Teeth sharp as scissors
for shredding exoskeletions
insects husked for eating
before Francis brought me in

to a room full of spirits
bottled bodies in a hall
80 million species
preserved in alcohol

shelved for thirty years
I’d crumble in your hand
to find out my identity
they did a CT scan.

A new mammal in a pickle jar
announced on Halloween
gathered in 1983
but never named or seen.
